Elkan Baggott has left Ipswich Town to join Millwall on a permanent basis, the south London club has confirmed. The centre back’s exit follows a year in which first‑team opportunities at Portman Road were scarce after a period of injuries and loan moves.
From loan stints to a permanent departure
Baggott, 23, had spent the 2024/25 campaign on loan at Blackpool, where he returned to the field after two extended spells on the sidelines. During that season at Bloomfield Road he made 20 appearances in total. Before that he had temporary spells with Bristol Rovers and Cheltenham Town in League One.
On his return to Ipswich last summer he signed an extended contract with the club, but playing time proved limited. For Ipswich Town he made two FA Cup appearances and did not feature in the Championship during the season prior to his transfer.
Millwall move and the new challenge
The transfer to Millwall is a permanent deal for an undisclosed fee. The player has signed a long‑term contract with the Lions, who say they have tracked his development closely.
"He's a player we've been tracking for some time now... He's a good age, has a real appetite to improve and fits the profile we look for defensively," said Millwall's Director of Football, Steve Gallen.
Gallen added that Baggott arrives to bolster defensive options and bring competition to an area the club views as a strength.
- Player: Elkan Baggott
- From: Ipswich Town
- To: Millwall (permanent, undisclosed fee)
- Recent appearances: 20 for Blackpool during 2024/25 loan; 2 FA Cup outings for Ipswich
Local impact and implications for Ipswich Town
The defender’s departure will reduce available options in central defence at Portman Road. Ipswich Town’s recruitment and squad management over the coming weeks will determine how the club replaces depth lost through this exit. The move also represents a significant change for Baggott personally, shifting from sporadic appearances at Ipswich to a fresh start under Millwall’s management.
| Club | Appearances noted in report | Competition |
|---|---|---|
| Blackpool (loan) | 20 | 2024/25 season (loan) |
| Ipswich Town | 2 | FA Cup outings (no Championship appearances reported) |
No financial details of the transfer have been disclosed. Millwall’s public comments frame the move as an investment in a young player with experience of senior, physical opposition in the EFL. For Ipswich Town supporters, the focus will now be on whether the club brings in reinforcements to maintain competition and cover at centre back.
