A Barnet college student has secured a place in a prestigious national exhibition after her ceramic work was chosen for display at the Royal Academy of Arts in Piccadilly.

Local talent on a national stage

The sculpture, titled Roots of Resilience, was created by 17-year-old art and design student Sachelle Davis while studying at Barnet and Southgate College’s High Barnet campus. The piece has been installed in the Royal Academy’s Weston Studio at Burlington House as part of the academy’s eighth annual Young Artists’ Summer Show.

The Young Artists’ Summer Show is a national platform that attracts thousands of entries. Sachelle’s work was selected from a field of more than 25,000 submissions to be included in this year’s curated presentation.

About the artwork

Roots of Resilience is a ceramic sculpture that examines the aesthetic and cultural importance of Afro hair. The piece uses sculpted coils and textured patterns to explore themes of identity and heritage.

“This piece explores the beauty and complexity of Afro hair, using form and texture to highlight both personal identity and wider cultural narratives. Through the sculpted coils and patterns, the work reflects on the struggles many people have faced in seeking acceptance. The piece becomes a celebration of resilience and pride.”

The quote above is Sachelle’s explanation of the concept and intention behind her work. She lives in New Southgate and developed the sculpture during her college course.
