Calderdale Council’s cabinet has approved a highways maintenance package worth £14.38 million for the 2026-27 municipal year, with almost £10 million of that total dedicated to repairs and improvements to roads and footpaths.
What the funding will prioritise
The council says the programme prioritises visible, practical repairs where money will have the greatest effect and places an emphasis on preventative maintenance and structured asset management. Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, Coun Darren Commons, set out the administration’s approach to directing the investment so it delivers “clear” prioritisation.
“The programme places a clear emphasis on delivering practical improvements that residents can see and experience and will be done by directing funding where it will have the greatest impact with an emphasis on preventative maintenance, robust asset management and clear prioritisation.”
Where work is planned
The cabinet approved a list of footways and sections of footpath to be addressed in the coming year. The planned works cover towns and wards across Calderdale and include stretches of flagged and paved footways as well as other footpath improvements.

Coun Commons (Reform UK, Brighouse) said the plan is intended to concentrate resources where they will be most effective and to adopt preventative approaches to limit future liabilities. The cabinet report and the approved list of footways aim to make that approach tangible for residents by identifying exact streets and pavements for treatment.
For Calderdale residents, the spending decision should mean patching of damaged pavements, replacement of flagged sections and targeted works to improve pedestrian routes in a number of neighbourhoods.
