Joe Denly, a fixture of Kent cricket for more than 20 years and a former England international, has confirmed he will retire from professional cricket at the end of the 2026 season. The 40-year-old first represented Kent as an 18-year-old in 2004 and, apart from a three-year spell with Middlesex, has spent the majority of his career at the county.
Long career with the county and England recall
Denly’s career includes appearances at international level across all formats. He was recalled to the England side nearly a decade after his debut and finished his international involvement with 15 Test matches, 16 one-day internationals and 13 T20s. His highest Test score for England, 94, came during the drawn Ashes Test at Headingley in 2019.
"After an incredible journey in professional cricket, the time has come for me to announce my retirement from the game at the end of the 2026 campaign,"
Denly reflected on his time with Kent and England, saying he had been fortunate to share dressing rooms with notable team-mates and to play in front of encouraging supporters. He described representing the county as a deep source of pride and said the club "will always be my second home."
Achievements and county impact
Across formats Denly has scored in excess of 14,000 career runs. He was part of Kent’s first Twenty20 winning team in 2007 and later became the county’s first player to surpass 5,000 T20 runs. He was also recognised by his peers as the Professional Cricketers’ Association player of the year in 2018, when he won the most valuable player award.
Simon Cook, Kent’s director of cricket, paid tribute to Denly’s service to the club, calling him an "outstanding servant" and saying his record will ensure he is remembered among the modern greats of Kent cricket.
