Kent County Council (KCC) and technology partner Active AI Ltd have launched a new smartphone app, WeRoam, across Kent designed to incentivise walking, wheeling and cycling by awarding points and prizes for everyday journeys.
How the scheme works
The app pairs with smartwatches and fitness trackers to automatically record walks, bicycle rides and wheelchair journeys. Users can also enter activity manually. Across the county, designated locations and trails are marked as "roam markers": when a user reaches one of these spots they collect points that can later be exchanged with participating local businesses.
"We want people across Kent to open the app, step outside and discover that their everyday journeys, however big or small are worth something," said Spencer Dixon, KCC deputy cabinet member for highways and transport.
WeRoam is presented by KCC as a way to make active travel "more fun, more social and more rewarding for everyone", aiming to nudge residents towards more movement in daily life while encouraging exploration of local areas.
Local perspectives and motivations
Matt Thacker, a long-standing sports coach in Kent, said the appeal of fitness apps has grown since the pandemic and that reward systems can motivate some people to exercise more, while noting individual preferences for guidance vary.
"Apps work for some people because they get a sense of fulfilment from completing different challenges and activities," Thacker said. "Since WeRoam has a rewards system, I think it could encourage users to be more proactive in exercising."
- Automatic tracking: Links to wearables and trackers.
- Manual logging: Users can enter activity by hand if needed.
- Roam markers: Points awarded at labelled landmarks and trails.
- Rewards: Points redeemable with businesses across Kent.

For residents, the app offers a practical nudge: routine journeys such as trips to the shop, commutes or short cycle rides can now contribute towards points that have real-world value. For local traders, participating in the rewards scheme may attract custom from people redeeming points at nearby outlets.
The initiative sits alongside wider efforts to promote active travel and healthier lifestyles in the county. Residents interested in trying WeRoam should check the app stores and local KCC communications for details on participating businesses and any guidance on linking devices.
