Edinburgh’s social enterprise Edinburgh Furniture Initiative (EFI) has confirmed it will remain at its Gorgie Road premises after agreeing a long lease with the building’s new owners.

Lease secured after months of uncertainty

The reuse furniture shop, which operates under the umbrella of homelessness charity Four Square, faced a period of doubt over its future earlier this year. EFI said that, with assistance from property advisers Graham + Sibbald and legal advisers Thorntons Law LLP, it has now reached an agreement with the site’s new proprietors, Thistle Property Group.

EFI described the outcome as a relief and said the shop would continue trading at 454 Gorgie Rd, EH11 2RN for the foreseeable future. The enterprise plays a funding role for Four Square: proceeds from sales support services for people experiencing homelessness across the city.

“We are delighted and very relieved.”

What EFI offers and local importance

Established in 2005, EFI refurbishes and resells second‑hand furniture, promoting reuse and offering low‑cost items to people furnishing homes on tight budgets. The shop is open seven days a week and operates a local delivery service within Edinburgh.

  • Address: 454 Gorgie Rd, Edinburgh, EH11 2RN
  • Opening: Open seven days (current hours published by EFI)
  • Delivery: Local delivery fee of £25 within Edinburgh

The arrangement safeguards both a community resource that reduces waste and a revenue stream that underpins Four Square’s charitable activity. EFI thanked customers, donors and supporters for their role in helping maintain the enterprise.

Practical note for residents and supporters

Supporters who donate goods, volunteer or shop at EFI can expect continuity of service at the Gorgie Road site. The charity urged continued community engagement — shopping, donating and recommending the shop — as each contribution helps fund frontline assistance for people affected by homelessness in the city.

Four Square and EFI’s continued presence in Gorgie will be watched closely by local residents and partner agencies, given the role the enterprise plays in both reducing furniture waste and supporting vulnerable people through the charity’s broader services.
