Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have mounted an intensive search after a 20-year-old man absconded from lawful custody following a transfer to North Manchester General Hospital for medical treatment.

Who the force are looking for

The man has been named as Marwan Jumaa. GMP say he had been detained in a secure hospital facility where he was serving an indefinite sentence following convictions for two robberies in which two women and police officers sustained serious injuries. Officers describe him as a substantial risk to the public, with particular concern for female members of the community.

"He’s a danger to the public, he’s a danger to females."

The warning was issued by Detective Superintendent Amber Waywell, who said the nature of Jumaa's original offending informed the concern and the public advice being issued by the force.

Where and when he was last seen

GMP say Jumaa was last observed in the Radcliffe area on Tuesday evening. He is described as a black man, of slim build, around 5ft 10in tall, with short dark hair. Officers believe he may have links to Bury, Prestwich and Crumpsall in Greater Manchester, and they have not ruled out connections to London and West Yorkshire.

  • Physical description: Black, slim build, short dark hair, ~5ft 10in
  • Risk assessment: Substantial risk; danger to females

Police response and public guidance

GMP have deployed specialist resources including the Force Critical Wanted Unit (FCWU) and are working with partner agencies in the hunt. Officers emphasised they have no current intelligence suggesting Jumaa has identified specific targets or plans to cause immediate harm, but they stressed the need for caution.

Det Supt Waywell urged members of the public not to approach the man if seen, and to contact police immediately. She said the force would rather receive multiple reports that turn out to be false than miss an accurate sighting.

Action Advice
If you see Jumaa Do not approach; call GMP immediately
If you have information Contact GMP or the Force Critical Wanted Unit with details

Officers continue to conduct enquiries to establish Jumaa's movements and add that they will circulate further information as enquiries progress. Anyone with information is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police through the usual channels.

This alert follows the transfer of a detained person from a secure hospital to North Manchester General Hospital for treatment, and it highlights the challenges police and health partners face when managing detainees requiring medical care within community hospital settings.
