Sean McCann booked his place in the men’s 400 metres freestyle final at the Commonwealth Games on Friday night, drawing loud support from his family in the stands at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.

“I’m delighted. It wasn’t really an expectation coming into the Championships, especially with how strong the field was, so to have made it is fantastic,” McCann said. “I wouldn’t say I felt pressure, but I was definitely nervous. There were so many people watching and I wanted to perform well, not just for myself but for Team Scotland as well. I’m glad I was able to produce a decent performance.”
McCann grew up in England but represents Scotland through his father, who was born in Glasgow. He is currently studying chemical engineering at Loughborough University and has previously represented Scotland at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Tobago in 2023, where he placed fifth in the 400m freestyle.

He began swimming at an early age and rose through the City of Leicester club system, winning multiple county titles and national age-group honours.
