Derby County head coach John Eustace has said he has the "full support" of owner David Clowes, but admitted he must deliver improved results as the Rams remain close to the bottom of the Championship table.
Pressure from results and injuries
The club have won only one of their first 11 league matches and sit perilously close to the relegation places. Eustace, now in his second full season at Pride Park, told BBC Radio Derby that discussions with the owner had been constructive and that Clowes was confident the situation could be resolved.
"You've got my full support,"
Despite that backing, Eustace stressed the simple reality of professional football: he must produce results. He described his feelings about the current run as "very angry" and "frustrated" but said his focus was on preparing the players who are available.
Squad depletion affecting selection
Derby's difficulties have been compounded by a long list of injuries, particularly among defensive players. Eustace confirmed recent setbacks, including captain Lewis Travis, who turned his ankle during the defeat at Stoke City and is expected to be sidelined for a short spell. The manager also noted other absences that have forced frequent reshaping of the backline.
- Derby have one win from 11 Championship fixtures so far this season.
- John Eustace met owner David Clowes for positive discussions and reports having the owner’s support.
- Injuries — notably in defence — have left the squad stretched and selection inconsistent.
On the positive side, Eustace revealed goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterström has returned to training after a knee problem, while striker Patrick Agyemang is undertaking light work as he recovers from an Achilles issue.
Injuries at a glance
| Player | Issue | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Lewis Travis | Turned ankle (Stoke City defeat) | Out for a couple of weeks |
| Jacob Widell Zetterström | Knee problem | Back in training |
| Patrick Agyemang | Achilles recovery | Light work |
Eustace acknowledged the challenge of continually having to adapt defensive personnel and the effect that has on consistency. He said his immediate task was to make the best of the players fit for selection and find solutions within the current squad.
With matches coming thickly in the Championship, the next few weeks will test the manager’s ability to steady the ship while the club contend with injuries and mounting pressure from results.
