Derbyshire officers are appealing for help after a would-be thief attempted a relay attack on a car parked on a driveway in the village of Kilburn, near Belper. The incident occurred at about 2.30am on Saturday, August 1, and police say the vehicle’s owner was fortunate that additional security measures prevented the theft.
What happened
Police from the Amber Valley Safer Neighbourhood Team say the suspect was seen trying to amplify the car key’s wireless signal, a method used to unlock and start keyless vehicles from close range. Officers have released an image of the person involved and are asking anyone who recognises them — or who may have seen a vehicle arriving in the area — to come forward.
“We are releasing an image of the suspect in the hope that someone may recognise the offender, or alternatively see them arriving in the area, possibly in a vehicle.”
Police request and practical advice
Officers say they have completed enquiries in the immediate area but want residents who have not yet been contacted to review their CCTV and dashcam footage. Anyone with information is asked to contact Derbyshire police quoting incident number 26000457584.
Police also reminded motorists of steps to help prevent relay attacks. Their guidance includes:
- Keep car keys away from the vehicle when at home.
- Store keys in a screened or signal-blocking pouch (for example, a Faraday bag) and check the pouch periodically.
- Reprogram keys if you buy a second-hand car.
- Turn off the wireless signal on your key fob when it is not in use, if the option is available.
