Louis Carey, the player with more senior appearances than any other in Bristol City history, has been appointed head coach of the club's under-21 side.
From hometown hero to academy lead
Carey, 49, made 646 appearances for the Robins between 1995 and 2014, spending virtually his whole playing career with his hometown club apart from a short spell at Coventry. He will formally take up the under-21 role at the end of July and will be charged with preparing academy players to step up to first-team football.
Since retiring as a player, Carey has built a coaching CV that includes around eight and a half years working in Southampton's age-grade teams and a spell at Forest Green Rovers, bringing a mix of long-term academy experience and hands-on development work to his new post.
"We can only live in the present but we can plan for the future and, from what I have seen and the people I have spoken to, I believe there is a brilliant environment being built here, including the type of players we are signing and bringing through," Carey said.

The under-21 head coach has a clear remit at Ashton Gate: to bridge academy and senior squads by ensuring promising young players are ready for the demands of Championship football. Sporting director James Ellis described the role as "fundamental" to the club's structure.
