Coventry's Impact Steel Band has been selected to perform at the Southbank Centre in London this weekend as part of a national celebration of steel pan music marking its 75th anniversary in the UK. The invitation spotlights the city's continuing contribution to Britain’s Caribbean musical heritage.

The group, formed in 2007, travels to the capital to take part in the Southbank's Steel Scenes festival, which coincides with the building’s own 75th anniversary. The band normally features around 10 to 12 musicians and has appeared at local events including the Godiva Festival.

Fareed Siddiqui, the group's manager and musical director, said the invitation had come after the festival team had seen the band's performances and touring activity on social media. He described the selection as "a huge honour" for the group and for central England.

Siddiqui also discussed the logistics of taking a full outfit to London: the band have hired "a minibus and also a very long transit bus to take all the kit down" as they plan the journey along the M1.
In addition to community and festival appearances at home, the band will present a specially arranged piece composed by Siddiqui's 13-year-old son. The composition commemorates the first steel band performance in the UK and is intended as a tribute to the pioneers who introduced the instrument and repertoire to British audiences.
