A Plymouth woman has been jailed for nine years after being found guilty of manslaughter in connection with an acid attack that left her former partner with catastrophic injuries which later proved fatal.
Prosecution says victim 'set up' by ex-partner
Prosecutors told the court that the victim, 38‑year‑old Danny Cahalane, was in substantial debt to a criminal organisation based overseas. The debt was said to be around £120,000, and enquiries disclosed that he had been gambling with money he owed.
According to the case presented at trial, the defendant, identified in court as Danny's former partner and the mother of his children, helped to facilitate attacks against him. That included arranging an attempted abduction outside her home and later informing a gang of where Mr Cahalane would be on the night he was attacked.
Attack at home on Lipson Road
The assault occurred in the early hours of 21 February at a property on Lipson Road, while the couple's young daughter was asleep upstairs. Mr Cahalane suffered burns after acid was thrown in his face and was taken to hospital with severe injuries. He subsequently died from those injuries.
"I am a bad mum. I know what he's like. He's not a victim. He brought all this on himself, and I knew about it. I knew he was in debt to people and I still let my daughter go there."

Police described the probe as lengthy and complex. Their work connected the earlier kidnap attempt — in which three men approached Mr Cahalane's car but he managed to drive away — with the subsequent, fatal assault at his home.
The court concluded that the defendant's actions amounted to manslaughter. She was given a custodial term of nine years.
