Firefighters remain at the scene of a large wildfire burning in the Rhinogydd mountains near Cwm Bychan, close to Harlech, with the incident estimated to cover around 2,000 acres.

Challenging terrain and access hamper operations

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service has described conditions as challenging, saying a "significant proportion" of the ground affected is inaccessible by vehicle or on foot. That limited access has made direct firefighting operations particularly demanding and prolonged the response.

Because of the difficult terrain, the service sought aerial support from Natural Resources Wales. Although the request has been approved, helicopter assistance will not be available until early next week owing to demand from other wildfire incidents elsewhere in the UK. Multiple local fire crews remain at the scene and are expected to continue attending for some time.

Protecting people and the environment

Crews are maintaining contact with nearby properties and a local campsite as a precaution. At present there is no indication that evacuations are required, but emergency services are monitoring the situation around the mountain and in nearby areas such as Capelulo and Braichmelyn Forest, Bethesda.

"Our focus remains on containing the fire as effectively as possible, while monitoring changing conditions and protecting the surrounding environment," said Jody McEachern, Head of Prevention.

The fire service emphasised the cooperative response involving Natural Resources Wales and other partners and thanked local residents, businesses and visitors for their patience. Members of the public have been urged to avoid affected areas to preserve access routes for emergency vehicles and to allow firefighters to concentrate on containment.

For local residents and visitors, the immediate practical actions are straightforward: avoid the affected mountain and forest areas, keep clear of routes needed by emergency services, and follow updates from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and local authorities. The prolonged presence of crews and the lack of immediate aerial capability mean the situation may remain fluid over the coming days.

InfoRadar will continue to monitor developments and report further details as emergency services update on containment, resource deployment and any changes to public-safety advice.
