Police in New Cumberland Borough have charged several minors after linking a series of vehicle break‑ins and thefts that have affected neighbourhoods across the borough and nearby areas of Cumberland County.
What officers say happened
According to a police release, investigators consolidated a number of incidents and, using surveillance footage, forensic evidence and electronic monitoring, identified a group of youngsters alleged to have been involved in multiple offences. On 6 July four minors were charged after inquiries into five separate but related cases. A further eight investigations led to additional charges announced four days later.
Police said one stolen car was driven through New Cumberland Borough Park before being "significantly damaged" and abandoned, and a minor admitted taking part in overnight "car hopping".
Officers report two vehicles were taken during the initial probe, alongside several thefts from unlocked cars. In one incident a Kia Optima was stolen after the key fob was left inside an unlocked vehicle. Surveillance footage, the statement added, captured multiple people entering a number of unlocked vehicles before the Kia was taken and later driven through the borough and into Harrisburg.
Evidence and admissions
Police say footage corroborated a minor’s admission that they participated in what was described as overnight "car hopping", and that they both rode in and drove the stolen Kia after it was taken. Investigators also identified a person of interest in a related vehicle theft from Penbrook Borough.
The charges brought against the minors include:
- Theft by unlawful taking
- Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle
- Receiving stolen property
Context and ongoing inquiries
The arrests and charges follow a separate development in which an arrest warrant was issued for a man, named by police as Jayden Munoz, in connection with a similar late‑June series of incidents affecting the county. Police have linked multiple events that occurred across the borough and continue to investigate further connections.
