South Gloucestershire drivers and public transport users are being warned of a series of overnight closures on the A38 later this month as the council progresses an active travel and public transport improvement programme.
When and where the closures will take place
Work will require full overnight road closures between 20:00 and 06:00. The council has published a phased schedule covering three sections of the A38:
- Hazel Lane to Greenhill, Alveston: 23–26 July
- Fernhill to Washingpool Hill, Rudgeway: 27–30 July
- Layby opposite Almondsbury Scout Group to Old Aust Road: 31 July–3 August
| Section | Location | Dates | Closure hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hazel Lane to Greenhill | 23–26 July | 20:00–06:00 |
| 2 | Fernhill to Washingpool Hill | 27–30 July | 20:00–06:00 |
| 3 | Layby opposite Almondsbury Scout Group to Old Aust Road | 31 July–3 August | 20:00–06:00 |
What drivers and residents should expect
The council says signed diversion routes will be in place for the overnight closures. Once the full closures conclude, work will continue with traffic management measures including narrow lanes and overnight operations while new walking, cycling and crossing facilities are installed.
"Following these closures, work will continue with narrow lanes and overnight traffic management in place while new walking, cycling and crossing facilities are installed. Diversion routes will be signed."
Motorists should expect changes to normal journey times on the affected nights and for a period afterwards while remaining works are carried out. Public transport operators using the A38 may also adjust timetables or routes during the closures; passengers are advised to check services in advance.
Practical tips and local impact
- Plan journeys outside the closure windows where possible to avoid delays.
- Allow extra time if travelling late in the evening or early morning during the scheduled dates.
- Follow signed diversion routes and any temporary traffic management measures.
The work forms part of the council’s broader efforts to improve active travel and public transport infrastructure along the route. While the closures will cause short-term disruption, the authority says the changes will provide improved facilities for walkers, cyclists and people using public transport once complete.
Information on diversions and progress is usually published by South Gloucestershire Council; residents and road users should consult the council website or local travel updates for any late changes before travelling.
