Man confirmed dead at scene after evening crash by university
A pedestrian has died following a collision with a car on Stafford Street in Wolverhampton city centre. Emergency services were called at around 6.11pm on Monday 13 July to the stretch close to the University of Wolverhampton. Despite rapid attendance by paramedics, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
West Midlands Ambulance Service said one ambulance and a paramedic officer were dispatched. In a brief statement, the service confirmed that the patient could not be saved.
“On arrival, crews discovered one patient, a man, who was the pedestrian. Sadly, it quickly became apparent that nothing could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead at the scene.”
West Midlands Police officers closed routes around the city’s inner ring road near Stafford Street while they worked at the scene on Monday evening. Motorists were urged to avoid the area, with officers managing traffic and preserving the scene for investigation.
Appeal for information as collision unit investigates
Police said they would issue further details in due course and asked for the public’s help with the inquiry. Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was in the area around the time of the collision and may have witnessed the incident or captured it on dashcam or phone video.
“We’re currently at the scene of a serious collision in Wolverhampton city centre. The ring road is closed near Stafford Street, with officers at the scene… Anyone with footage or information should call 101 quoting log 5114 of 13 July.”
The location — immediately to the north of the central campus and linking to the ring road — is one of the city’s busiest corridors at peak times. While a full collision reconstruction will take time, early scene closures are standard practice to secure evidence, map vehicle positions and gather witness accounts, all of which will inform the formal investigation.

Scene management and local impact
Closures around the inner ring road typically lead to knock-on congestion across central Wolverhampton. While police have not issued a detailed diversion plan or timeline for reopening, drivers were asked to reroute on Monday night while specialist officers examined the scene. The proximity to the university and key city-centre amenities means pedestrian and bus flows are often high on weekday evenings, particularly during term time; police are expected to review CCTV from nearby buildings as part of routine evidence-gathering.
Formal identification of the man and contact with next of kin has not been confirmed publicly. Further updates from police are anticipated once initial enquiries are complete. As with all fatal collisions, a full report is likely to be prepared for the coroner in due course.
How to assist the inquiry
If you were in the Stafford Street area around 6pm–6.30pm on Monday and saw anything that could assist officers, or if your vehicle’s dashcam recorded the moments before or after the impact, contact police on 101 and provide reference log 5114 (13 July). Even short clips or partial observations can help establish speed, signalling and pedestrian movements in the seconds leading up to the collision.
