At a full council meeting held on 16 July, members of North Northamptonshire Council elected Reform UK councillor Andy Sims to serve as chairman of the authority until May 2027. Cllr Sims, who represents Finedon, succeeds fellow Reform UK member Maurice Eglin, who stood down after offensive social media posts from his earlier online activity were revealed.
Role and remit
The chairman's responsibilities are largely ceremonial. They include presiding over full council meetings and acting as the council's civic representative at public events across the area. The position does not alter the political leadership or the executive functions of the council, but it remains important for community engagement and protocol.
Chairman's priorities
Cllr Sims said he was honoured to be chosen and set out immediate community-focused priorities. He confirmed he will support local events and organisations during his term and has named two local charities as his official causes for the coming year: Wicksteed Park and Two Wheels For Life.
“It is a real honour to have been chosen as chairman of North Northamptonshire Council. I’m looking forward to representing our communities over the coming year, supporting local events and organisations, and working alongside fellow councillors to promote the area. I’m particularly pleased to be supporting my chosen charities, which do such valuable work for residents across North Northamptonshire.”
Practical information for residents
The new chairman will preside at the council's civic duties and the next full council meeting is scheduled for Thursday 24 September. Residents wanting to raise matters for council debate should continue to use the council's established channels for petitions, public questions and ward councillor contact.

Council chairmanships, while sometimes mistaken for executive roles, are important for maintaining the formal conduct of council business and for representing the borough at functions and community gatherings. Local organisations that work with the council or hope to publicise events may now expect civic support from the chairman's office, particularly where it aligns with the charities Cllr Sims has chosen to back.
Further details about civic engagements and how to contact the chairman's office are available on the council's website and through your local ward councillor.
