Sefton Libraries are bringing back their summer wildlife sessions to all branches across the borough, offering children the chance to meet snakes, lizards, spiders and other creatures as part of a series running from 12–28 August.
What’s on and where
The programme will visit each of Sefton’s libraries with two sessions at every venue. The venues taking part are:
- Netherton
- Bootle
- Formby
- Crosby
- Southport
- Meadows (Maghull)
The events are organised with Party Central Wildlife Visits, run by Scott Gavin, and form part of the library service’s summer offer aimed at children who may not otherwise have opportunities to encounter such animals.
Purpose and delivery
Lesley Davies, senior development manager – communities for Sefton Library & Information Service, explained the sessions are designed to be both accessible and educational. The visits allow youngsters to see and often handle animals in a controlled setting while learning about their care and natural habitats.

She added that staff leading the sessions are careful to minimise stress for the animals and to manage interaction in an orderly way. The visits also aim to challenge common childhood fears — such as those of snakes and spiders — by providing a safe, informative experience.
Practical information for families
Sefton Libraries charge a small fee of £3 per child to attend. According to the library service, the fee does not cover the full cost of the visiting provider but helps ensure bookings are taken seriously so that spaces are used by those who intend to attend.
The sessions have a history in the borough: in previous years an owl known as Olly was a regular visitor and last year a meerkat featured among the animals. This summer’s line-up will include a variety of reptiles and arachnids.

Parents and carers should note that while most children are able to handle the animals, interaction is supervised and arranged so that both children and animals remain comfortable. The events combine entertainment with learning about animal welfare, diet and habitats.
