Residents across parts of Derbyshire are being advised that aircraft from the Royal Air Force’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) are due to fly over local towns on Saturday 18 July as the unit transits to display commitments. The exact type of aircraft is dependent on availability, and the schedule may be adjusted or cancelled if weather conditions or operational requirements dictate.
Where and when to look
At present, the BBMF is expected to pass over the following places at these approximate times:
- Ilkeston — between 14:40 and 15:10
- Ambergate — between 14:45 and 15:15
- Ripley — between 14:45 and 15:15
- Aston-on-Trent — between 15:00 and 15:30
The BBMF operates a fleet that includes five Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Lancaster, a C47 Dakota and two Chipmunks (the latter primarily used for training). Any one of these types — depending on operational availability — could be seen during the flypast.
“The mission of the RAF BBMF is to maintain the priceless artefacts of our national heritage in airworthy condition in order to commemorate those who have fallen in the service of this country. The RAF BBMF also serves to promote the modern day Air Force and to inspire the future generations.”
What the BBMF does and when it appears
The BBMF is based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and balances public displays with frequent flypasts. Alongside full display appearances at airshows and events, the unit performs numerous transits and up to several hundred flypasts each year to use available flying hours and reach display locations around the UK.
| Aircraft types in BBMF fleet | Typical role |
|---|---|
| Spitfires (x5) | Display and commemorative flying |
| Hurricanes (x2) | Display and commemorative flying |
| Lancaster (x1) | Iconic bomber displays and flypasts |
| C47 Dakota (x1) | Transport heritage displays |
| Chipmunks (x2) | Training |
Display season usually runs from May through to September, with crews undertaking preparatory flying in April and seeking formal approvals for public displays. The BBMF’s full summer schedule includes numerous events across the UK, including airshows and local festivals.
Practical points for the public
- Times given are approximate — pass-bys may be earlier or later depending on route and conditions.
- Flights can be cancelled at short notice due to weather.
- There is no need to travel to a specific venue; the aircraft are visible from wide areas along the transit route.
Those hoping to see the BBMF are advised to keep an eye on local media and the RAF’s communications for any last-minute changes. Photographers should be mindful of safety and local regulations when choosing vantage points.
