The family of a long‑standing lollipop man in Wallasey have said they are devastated after floral tributes placed outside the school where he worked were taken.

David “Dave the Lollipop Man” York, a retired painter and decorator who spent years directing pupils safely across roads in New Brighton, died on 14 July aged 76. In the days that followed, parents, pupils and neighbours left flowers and cards opposite Mount Primary School as a mark of respect.
But members of the family say some of those tributes were removed on camera. Two people were filmed taking flowers and, according to relatives, returned later and took the remaining bunches.
"They even returned a second time and took the lot. It's incredibly upsetting and difficult to understand why anyone would do something so heartless."
The theft was particularly painful because the family say a 13‑year‑old grandson witnessed the first incident and tried to stop those taking the flowers. The family have appealed publicly for anyone with information to come forward and said they are not seeking confrontation but an explanation.

Relatives and former pupils described Mr York as someone who was "absolutely adored" by children and families.
