Four public parks across Gateshead have again been recognised among the country's best green spaces after attaining Green Flag status in the latest round of awards.

What has been awarded

The sites confirmed by the scheme are Saltwell Park, Chase Park, Felling Park and Derwent Walk Country Park. In addition, Saltwell Park and Chase Park have achieved Green Heritage Site Accreditation, an endorsement supported by Historic England that reflects the conservation and promotion of historic features within those parks.

"We are incredibly delighted that four of our parks have once again achieved Green Flag Award status," said Councillor Robinson, Cabinet Member for Sport and Culture.

The awards are designed to recognise parks that are welcoming, well maintained, safe and environmentally sustainable. Gateshead Council highlighted the role of staff and local volunteers in maintaining the spaces throughout the year.

Local impact and why it matters

Green Flag status is widely used as a benchmark for quality in public parks. For residents this signals that those sites are prioritised for upkeep, safety, biodiversity and community use. The Green Heritage accreditation for Saltwell and Chase also confirms a focus on preserving and interpreting historic elements — which can influence future funding, tourism and education initiatives.

Gateshead Council thanked volunteers, friends groups and community organisations whose ongoing work contributes to the parks’ condition and reputation. The parks offer a mix of attractions, including play areas, walking routes, wildlife habitats and historic features, which together support local health and well‑being.

Practical information

Residents can continue to use the parks as usual; awards do not introduce restrictions but may result in continued or increased investment, events and conservation activities. Those interested in volunteering or joining friends groups are usually able to contact Gateshead Council’s parks team for details of opportunities and upcoming activities.
