Four members of a family from Leeds have died after a car left the A38 near Toyota Island late on Saturday, 25 July. Local community groups and the Gambian High Commission in the UK have paid tribute to the victims as police continue an investigation into the circumstances of the collision.
What happened
Derbyshire police say the collision occurred at about 11pm when a red Hyundai came off the carriageway and struck a tree. A 36‑year‑old man, two women aged 18 and 30, and a baby girl were pronounced dead either at the scene or shortly after being taken to hospital. The victims have been identified locally as Gambian nationals who were travelling together from Birmingham to Leeds.
A 33‑year‑old man, described by police as the driver of the vehicle, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and remains under treatment. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has subsequently been bailed while inquiries continue.

The Gambian Welfare Society in Leeds (TGWS) and the Gambia High Commission have expressed deep sorrow. TGWS highlighted the effect of the loss on the local Gambian and Sarahuleh communities and described one of the victims, named locally as Abu Camara, as devoted to community causes.

In statements circulated on social media, those who knew Mr Camara recalled his voluntary work, support for mosque projects and mentoring of children in football. The High Commission confirmed that four Gambian nationals died in the incident.
