Local charity runs free sessions to get more Torbay residents cycling
Torbay residents are being offered a chance to build confidence on two wheels this summer with free cycle training and e‑bike experiences organised by local charity Safe, Sustainable Travel Torbay (SSTT). The programme is part of the national Big Bike Revival scheme and aims to help people who have never learned to ride, those who haven’t cycled for years and anyone curious about electric bikes.
Qualified instructors from SSTT will provide tailored, friendly support at sessions across the Bay. The charity has also continued its summer programme of free bike repairs, helping keep people riding by fixing basic mechanical issues and offering practical advice.
“I used to be really worried about cycling on the roads, but now I cycle all over the Bay, including to work. I love being able to leave my car at home.”
The testimony above comes from Amanda, a local attendee at last year’s e‑bike confidence session. Her experience highlights the practical benefits organisers say the sessions bring: improved confidence on roads, healthier travel choices and the chance to leave the car behind for shorter trips.
Where and when
Initial free Cycle Confidence sessions are scheduled for People’s Parkfield in Paignton on 21 and 24 July. Further sessions are planned at Torbay Hospital and South Devon College in September. SSTT will also host Kidical Mass, a free family bike ride during Children’s Week in Paignton to encourage relaxed, supportive group cycling for families.

Local support and visits
The charity’s summer activities have attracted high‑profile visitors. Sir Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, dropped in to see a bike repair session at Cantina in Young’s Park and praised SSTT’s inclusive work. Local MP Steve Darling also visited — he has previously joined community rides on a tandem and backed the charity’s efforts to boost active travel in Torbay.
- Free sessions include beginner cycle confidence and e‑bike trials.
- Bike repair events run alongside training to keep bikes roadworthy.
- Family rides such as Kidical Mass aim to make cycling accessible for children and carers.
Beth Huntley, Chair of SSTT, summed up the charity’s aims, saying cycling brings health benefits, saves money and reduces congestion while allowing people to enjoy Torbay’s scenery. For residents interested in joining, SSTT recommends turning up at listed events — instructors will assess ability and offer tailored support on the day.
For many households in Torbay, the offer may be more than a leisure opportunity: it is a practical route to lower travel costs and more active daily life. With sessions running through the summer and plans into September, there are multiple chances for residents to try out cycling in a safe, supportive setting.
