Gloucester City secured a 1-0 pre-season victory over Welsh Premier side Barry Town United at Jenner Park on Saturday, with a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) intervention proving decisive.
Penalty decision after VAR intervention
The only goal arrived in the 34th minute when Ashley Hemmings converted from the spot. The penalty was awarded after James Lester was adjudged to have fouled Hemmings shortly after the half-hour mark. Although the on-field referee pointed to the spot amid Barry appeals that the contact had occurred outside the area, the original decision was confirmed following a VAR check.
“It slowed the game down but I think it was the right decision. The argument was whether contact was inside or outside the area. It was a different experience but I think I’d get frustrated with it. Barry and the other teams in the Welsh Premier have that in every game going forward but it’s not something I’d be particularly pleased with.”
The comments were made by City boss Daf Williams, who accepted the decision while also flagging the potential frustration VAR can bring to the flow of a match.

Barry started brightly and registered the game’s first shot on target inside six minutes when Sion Spence tested goalkeeper Jared Thompson with a low strike. Gloucester responded almost immediately: Tom Owen-Evans dragged a shot wide and Hemmings forced a routine stop from Barry keeper George Ratcliffe on 14 minutes, with Liam Cross later firing over.

In stoppage time of the opening period Elliott Dugan almost levelled with an acrobatic overhead kick that drifted narrowly over.
Early in the second half Ratcliffe made a solid save from Morgan Lewis, while a dangerous cross from Bernard narrowly evaded a stretching Dugan as Barry pushed for an equaliser.
