Hartlepool’s RNLI crew responded to a medical emergency at sea on Wednesday morning, launching their all-weather lifeboat to assist a man aboard a 10-metre fishing vessel several miles off the town’s coast.
Chronology of the response
The call came into Humber Coastguard at 10:00am, at which point Hartlepool RNLI volunteers were paged. The station’s all-weather lifeboat, the John Sharp, put to sea at 10:20am and came alongside the fishing vessel approximately five miles off Hartlepool at 10:40am.
Two RNLI crew members boarded the fishing boat to assess the casualty. The male patient was transferred to the lifeboat and returned to the Ferry Road lifeboat station, arriving at 11:05am. Lifeboat crew assisted the man to an awaiting ambulance.
Local resources and support on scene
The lifeboat arrival was coordinated with the Hartlepool Coastguard Rescue Team, who were present at the lifeboat station to provide assistance when the casualty came ashore. After the operation the all-weather lifeboat was refuelled and made ready for service again at 11:20am.

Why this matters locally
Hartlepool has an active fishing fleet and a busy coastline used for work and leisure. Rapid professional response by volunteer lifeboat crews and the coastguard is vital when medical emergencies occur at sea, where access to immediate NHS services is naturally delayed. The RNLI’s ability to transfer a casualty to shore and into ambulance care within just over an hour demonstrates the value of local search-and-rescue capability.
