A 41-year-old man has been sentenced to prison after being convicted of raping an unconscious woman in Sheffield city centre in the early hours of 20 September last year.
Incident and arrest
The offence occurred at about 1am, when the victim was attacked on a street in the city centre. Passers-by raised the alarm and the victim was taken to hospital where an early evidence kit was completed to assist the police investigation.
Witness action crucial to conviction
Four young women who witnessed the attack challenged the assailant and began filming the assault when their pleas for him to stop were ignored. Their footage proved decisive during the subsequent trial at Sheffield Crown Court.
"These girls were upstanders, not bystanders," said Detective Constable Sophie Windle, noting their bravery and the vital role their recordings played in securing a conviction.
The defendant, Ansar Younis of Hatherley Road, Sheffield, was arrested on the same day as the attack. He provided no comment during police interview, denied the charges initially but was found guilty following a trial and sentenced to nine years' imprisonment on 2 July.
Police response and community safety
South Yorkshire Police said they carried out forensic examinations at the hospital and pursued the case through to conviction. Sheffield District Commander Jamie Henderson publicly thanked the witnesses after the incident and police reiterated their appreciation following the sentencing.
