Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have launched a manhunt after a 20-year-old man, Marwan Jumaa, absconded from lawful custody while at North Manchester Hospital for medical treatment.

What the force has confirmed

GMP said Jumaa was transferred from a secure hospital facility to North Manchester Hospital for treatment and left custody after the move. The force has not disclosed the nature of the treatment he was due to receive.

Officers described Jumaa as black, of skinny build, approximately 5ft 10ins tall with short dark hair. He was born on 18 October 2005 and is currently serving a custodial sentence for assault.

Local links and safety advice

Police say Jumaa is believed to have links to Bury, Prestwich, Crumpsall, Leeds and London. GMP have urged anyone who spots him not to approach but to contact the emergency services immediately.

"Anybody with information regarding the whereabouts of Jumaa is asked to contact police on 101 or contact the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111."

Officers have requested that any sighting should be reported to 999 without delay, quoting log number 3544 of 14/07/2026. The force has not released further details about Jumaa or the circumstances of his escape at this time.

  • Do not approach the individual if you believe you have seen him.
  • Phone 999 immediately in an emergency, quoting log number 3544 of 14/07/2026.
  • For non-urgent information, call GMP on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Implications for local residents

The news will be of particular concern to communities in Bury and the surrounding suburbs listed by the force. Hospitals and custodial transport arrangements are routinely used to move detainees for healthcare; absconds, while relatively uncommon, place a spotlight on the security and escort arrangements involved.

GMP have so far limited the details released about the incident. Local policing teams and hospital security partners will be working to locate Jumaa and to reassure residents. Anyone with CCTV, dashcam or other information that could assist the investigation should come forward to GMP or Crimestoppers.

InfoRadar will update this report as the force issues further information.
