Leicestershire Police have urged football supporters to plan their journeys home as the force continues a summer crackdown on motorists driving under the influence. Officers say the campaign has so far resulted in 148 arrests across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Enforcement figures and timing concerns

The force reports that of the total arrests, 108 were on suspicion of drink driving, 27 on suspected drug driving and 13 for refusing to provide a sample. Police also highlighted that more than a quarter of the arrests followed road traffic collisions, and that 16 arrests were made in North West Leicestershire.

Officers are particularly keen to stress the risk of being over the legal limit the morning after drinking. So far this campaign, 22 motorists have been arrested between 5am and midday, a figure the force cites to underline that late-night drinking combined with late kick-off times can still result in offending the following day.

Advice to supporters

Chief Inspector Jodie White, of the Specialist Support Department, urged people to consider their journey before going to watch the match, stressing the range of safer alternatives available.

"As fans gather this evening to watch England's match, we're encouraging everyone to think about how they'll get home before kick-off. Supporting your team should be enjoyable, but if you've been drinking alcohol or taking drugs, don't take the risk of driving."

She advised supporters to organise travel in advance, whether that means arranging a lift with a sober driver, booking private hire, using public transport where available or staying overnight.

  • Plan your return journey before you go out.
  • Remember you can be over the limit the morning after drinking.
  • Consider taxis, designated drivers, public transport or overnight stays.

Local impact and policing approach

The campaign reflects a proactive policing approach aimed at reducing collisions and improving road safety across the county. Officers say they will continue to carry out targeted patrols and enforcement activity to identify drink- and drug-drivers and take action where necessary.

For supporters attending matches or summer events, the message from Leicestershire Police is straightforward: make a plan before you leave and do not take the risk of driving after consuming alcohol or drugs. The force's activity is intended to deter dangerous decisions and keep roads safer for all road users.

Local residents and visitors seeking further guidance should consult Leicestershire Police channels for real-time travel and safety information ahead of large events.
