Sheffield United have sent one of their young defensive prospects out on loan for the coming season after 19-year-old Zain Tahir completed a season-long switch to Oldham Athletic.
From Bramall Lane academy to regular senior football
Tahir came through the Blades’ Academy system and signed a scholarship in the summer of 2023. He featured regularly for United’s Under-21 side, contributing to the squad that won the Professional Development League National title in 2024, and later signed his first professional contract in April 2025.
Last season he gained his first taste of senior football during a late loan spell at Scunthorpe United in the National League. The move to Oldham under manager Micky Mellon is designed to build on that experience by offering more consistent first-team minutes in the EFL.
Player profile and pre-season involvement
Tahir is described as a flexible defender able to operate at centre-back or left-back. He spent much of pre-season training with Mellon's squad, appearing in warm-up fixtures against Everton Under-21s and Huddersfield Town, which Oldham said helped him settle into the group.

Mellon welcomed the signing, stressing the club had admired Tahir for some time and pointing to his character, professionalism and versatility. In the manager’s words, the player is “athletic, composed in possession and enjoys defending properly,” traits that fit Oldham's style of play and should help him develop.
