Widespread disruption across the county
Rail passengers in Shropshire faced significant disruption on Tuesday 14 July as Transport for Wales (TfW) cancelled and curtailed services owing to a shortage of trains and a separate track issue near Craven Arms. The operator confirmed that services were cancelled in both directions between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth during the afternoon, with disruption expected to continue until the end of the day.
TfW said more trains than usual required simultaneous repairs, reducing the fleet available for service. The company arranged rail replacement buses between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth through the day to keep people moving, while warning customers to allow extra time for journeys.
What TfW is saying
“We expect to have a reduced number of trains available on Tuesday, July 14, whilst our depot teams continue to work to ensure our on board air conditioning is fully functional. There will be no services running between Machynlleth and Aberystwyth in either direction. A reduced service will run between Machynlleth and Shrewsbury in both directions.”
That reduction left the Cambrian main line operating only between Machynlleth and Shrewsbury, with the coastal section suspended for the day. The shortfall also spilled over into the West Midlands corridor: TfW services on the corridor between Wolverhampton and Birmingham International were forced to start and terminate at Wolverhampton, rather than continuing to Birmingham New Street or the airport station.
Ticket acceptance and alternatives
Other operators continued to run between Wolverhampton and Birmingham, and TfW confirmed that customers could use services operated by West Midlands Railway, CrossCountry and Avanti West Coast without additional charge for the day. For many Shropshire travellers, that meant a workable route into Birmingham despite the curtailments, albeit with changes at Wolverhampton.
- Replacement buses: Operating between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth until end of service.
- Ticket acceptance: Valid on West Midlands Railway, CrossCountry and Avanti West Coast between Wolverhampton and Birmingham.
- Check before travel: Live updates and journey planners are available at www.tfw.wales.
Separate track defect near Craven Arms
In a further blow to local services, a track defect on the Heart of Wales Line near Craven Arms blocked the route between Craven Arms and Llandrindod. Trains from Swansea towards Shrewsbury were turned back at Llandrindod, with road transport provided onward. Services from Shrewsbury towards Swansea started at Llandrindod. Replacement buses were due to run along this section until 4pm, and passengers were advised to factor in longer journey times.
| Route/Section | Status | Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Shrewsbury – Aberystwyth | Trains cancelled | Replacement buses until end of day |
| Machynlleth – Shrewsbury | Reduced service | Check live times |
| Machynlleth – Aberystwyth | No trains both ways | Replacement buses via Shrewsbury link |
| Wolverhampton – Birmingham | TfW curtailed at Wolverhampton | Use WMR, CrossCountry, Avanti (no extra charge) |
| Craven Arms – Llandrindod (Heart of Wales) | Line blocked | Replacement buses until 4pm |
Impact on daily life in the county
The Cambrian and Heart of Wales routes are vital links for mid and west Wales, with Shrewsbury acting as a hub for work, study and hospital appointments. The knock-on from today’s disruption was felt by commuters heading in both directions, shoppers travelling into town, and families returning from trips along the coast. With services curtailed as far as Wolverhampton, anyone bound for central Birmingham faced extra changes and extended journey times.
Passengers are urged to plan carefully, allow for delays, and check live updates before setting off. TfW is directing customers to its website for the latest information on services, rail replacement buses and ticket acceptance arrangements: www.tfw.wales.
