The launch of a limited-edition Ukrainian Pale Ale at Drink Valley in Old Town brought together members of Swindon’s Ukrainian community, volunteers, local residents, councillors and businesses for an evening of fundraising and cultural celebration.
Beer brewed with a Ukrainian recipe and honey
The beer, named SYLA, was brewed by Drink Valley using a recipe inspired by Rivne Brewery and incorporates 20kg of Ukrainian honey in its production. Bottles and draught pours are now on sale at the Drink Valley brewery, with proceeds earmarked to support community projects organised by Swindon Welcomes Ukraine and humanitarian charities working in Ukraine.
"It was wonderful to celebrate this latest chapter in the special bond Swindon has with its Ukrainian community," said Deputy Leader Jake Chandler, speaking on behalf of Swindon Borough Council.
Event combined fundraising with culture
The launch evening also showcased Ukrainian culture. Traditional food was supplied by Phoenix Café of Cirencester and attendees heard live performances of Ukrainian songs by singer Anastasiia Lychyk. Hosts and committee members outlined how the brewing project had become a symbol of the developing relationship between the two towns.
Ian Howard, one of the hosts and a committee member, explained why local people have opened their homes to Ukrainians since the war began and how that hospitality has enriched their lives.
