The Greensand Ridge will be celebrated across Bedfordshire this September as The Greensand Trust stages two final guided walks and an exclusive Heritage Open Day tour to round off its 40th-anniversary programme.
What the Ridge is and why it matters
Stretching roughly 40 miles from Leighton Buzzard in the south-west to Gamlingay in the north-east, the Greensand Ridge is an elevated band of sandstone that rises above the surrounding clay vales. Its distinctive green-tinted sandstone creates a soil type that supports rare habitats — from ancient woodlands and heathlands to historic parklands and arable farmland — and offers sweeping views across the county.
Celebrated locally as one of Bedfordshire’s principal walking routes, the Ridge attracts both casual ramblers and seasoned walkers who value its variety of landscapes and the biodiversity it supports. The Trust’s anniversary events aim to encourage more people to explore and to raise awareness of the conservation work required to maintain these habitats.
Two September walks to join
The Trust has scheduled two commemorative walks in September. Both are circular routes of manageable length and include local meeting points and partners:
- Sunday 6 September — Haynes Circular Walk (5.75 miles). Meeting point: Haynes Village Hall. The route follows sections of the Greensand Ridge Walk through Chicksands Woods and returns via the village of Haynes. Walkers will have a lunchtime stop featuring refreshments provided in collaboration with Wooden Hill Coffee.
- Sunday 27 September — Gamlingay & Historic Parklands Walk (7 miles). Meeting point: Gamlingay Eco Hub. This walk reaches the eastern edge of the Ridge and loops around Gamlingay and nearby historic parkland.
Both walks are presented as opportunities to enjoy fresh air and scenic countryside while supporting local conservation efforts, though participants are advised to check the Trust’s guidance on footwear and what to bring for a day outdoors.
