Charges follow fatal early-hours incident on Liverpool Road

Three men have been formally charged with manslaughter and affray after the death of 39-year-old Ben Wright in Irlam earlier this year. The incident occurred in the early hours of 29 March outside Dessie’s Place on Liverpool Road, and Mr Wright died two days later after being taken to hospital.

Who has been charged

Greater Manchester Police confirmed on Friday that the following men face charges in connection with the attack:

  • Jacob Hall, 19, of Chapel Street, Leigh
  • Cole Churchill, 20, of Morillion Road, Irlam
  • Connor Lee Browne, 19, of Bowness Avenue, Irlam
“Cole Churchill (23/08/2005) of Morillion Road, Irlam, Jacob Hall (29/11/2006) of Chapel Street, Leigh, and Connor Lee Browne (08/07/2007) of Bowness Avenue, Irlam, have all been charged with manslaughter and affray.”

The men are scheduled to appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on 21 August. Police say the charges relate to the incident on Liverpool Road on 29 March.

Background and local impact

The attack and subsequent death of Mr Wright prompted an investigation by GMP into the circumstances of the early-morning disturbance. The community has been left seeking answers following the loss of a local man and the decision to charge three people will mark a significant step in the legal process.

While court proceedings are pending, the charges do not amount to a conviction. The magistrates’ hearing in August is likely to determine whether the case will be sent to the Crown Court for trial.

Practical information for residents

Anyone with information about the incident who has not already spoken to police is asked to contact Greater Manchester Police. Those with dashcam or mobile phone footage from the Liverpool Road area in Irlam on 29 March may be able to assist the investigation.
