A 20-year-old man has been jailed for four years after a string of burglaries and vehicle offences across Brecon left households shaken and at least one car written off.
Series of offences over a month
Tinos Short, described in court as having no fixed abode, admitted 17 offences prosecuted at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court. The charges included burglary, aggravated vehicle taking, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving without insurance. The incidents occurred between 18 February and 19 March and involved multiple victims in the Brecon area.
During one intrusion in the early hours of 18 February, Short entered a property where the occupant, Michael Charles, was asleep. The front door had been left unlocked and keys were taken from inside. The homeowner’s Hyundai was subsequently driven away and later sustained significant damage. Repair bills for that vehicle were estimated at more than £8,900.

Family left unable to feel secure
On 19 March another family home was targeted. Short entered while the occupants — including a disabled man and a teenager — were asleep upstairs. He stole a Volkswagen Scirocco and, while attempting to flee, struck other vehicles repeatedly before overturning the car. The Scirocco was written off.
"We no longer feel safe in our own home."
The court heard the family relied on the vehicle for hospital appointments and daily travel, and the incident has prompted them to consider relocating. Judge Beard told the court the burglary had left a lasting effect on the family’s sense of security.
Further offences and court outcome
Prosecutors outlined additional thefts, including other vehicles reportedly taken and at least one vehicle found hidden in an attic. After admitting to the charges, Short was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.
