Emergency services remain at the scene of a serious collision on Chester Road in Sunderland after a car smashed into the side of a house close to Sunderland Royal Hospital in the early hours of the morning.
What happened
Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the junction of Chester Road and Kayll Road at about 5am. A VW T‑Roc is reported to have driven through metal railings and became lodged in the wall of a residential property. The vehicle remained trapped in the structure for several hours while emergency workers conducted their response.
Casualties and response
Paramedics treated an unconscious patient at the scene who was later taken by ambulance to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle with reported chest and pelvic injuries. Two other people at the scene declined assessment from ambulance crews and were subsequently transported to hospital by police.

The North East Ambulance Service confirmed they deployed multiple resources including ambulance crews, a rapid response vehicle with a doctor, a hazardous area response team (HART) and a specialist paramedic.
