Drivers, bus passengers and local businesses in Pontyberem are being warned of significant disruption after Carmarthenshire Council confirmed the B4317 Capel Ifan Road will be closed from Monday 20 July for approximately six weeks.
Why the closure is needed
The council says the closure is essential to replace temporary traffic controls with permanent traffic signals at a key point on the B4317. Work will begin at the start of the week and the road will not reopen until September.
Traffic management and access
A fully signed diversion route will be in operation while the works are carried out. The council has confirmed that pedestrian and vehicular access to individual properties along the closed section will be maintained throughout the closure.
- Planned closure: B4317 Capel Ifan Road, Pontyberem from 20 July for six weeks
- Diversion route: via B4306, B4309 and B4317
- Access: properties will retain pedestrian and vehicular access
Public transport changes
Carmarthenshire Council and local operator First Cymru will introduce a temporary shuttle service to maintain links while the roadworks are under way. However, not all existing journeys can be retained.
"An essential road closure will take place on the B4317 Capel Ifan Road in Pontyberem from Monday, July 20, for six weeks to allow the installation of traffic signals,"
As part of the arrangements:
| Service | Change during works |
|---|---|
| 195 | Will continue to operate between Llanelli and Carmarthen via Pontyberem and Llannon |
| 197 | Will be diverted via Ponthenri |
| 195A (temporary) | New shuttle operated by First Cymru providing connections in Pontyberem, serving Maengwynne, Five Roads and Cynheidre |
Council officers have warned that it will not be possible to operate a direct bus service between Pontyberem and Ponthenri during the works. Passengers who normally use that direct link should plan alternative journeys or use the temporary shuttle and redirected services.
Local consequences and what residents should do
For residents this means:
- Longer journey times on local roads while the diversion is in place
- Possible timetable adjustments for commuters using services 195 and 197
- Reliance on the 195A shuttle for certain local connections
Drivers are advised to follow the signed diversion route via the B4306, B4309 and the B4317 and to allow extra time for journeys during the six-week programme. Pedestrians and residents with properties on the closed section should check local notices for instructions on access arrangements.
The council and bus operator have framed the closure as a temporary inconvenience needed to deliver safer, permanent traffic controls. Information and updates have been provided through local travel channels and the council’s communications; residents should consult these sources for real-time changes while the works continue.
