A nature nursery in south Essex has been restored this week after a suspected arson attack earlier in July, with a wave of local volunteers and businesses helping to clear and rebuild the damaged woodland.
Fire believed to have been started deliberately
Little Wild Tribe, a nature nursery and pre-school based in Hadleigh Country Park, was targeted on the evening of Saturday 11 July. Fire crews from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service were called at about 7.20pm and had the blaze contained and extinguished by 8pm, the service said. The fire affected roughly 20 square metres of the facility's Little Wild Wood area off Castle Lane.
Local response: tradespeople and families step in
In the days that followed, staff and co-founders of Little Wild Tribe described the scene as devastating. Co-founder Kelly Guthrie said the woodland was "absolutely decimated" and called the aftermath heart-breaking. Her colleague Emma Baker told volunteers’ efforts were "humbling" as dozens of people turned up with tools, materials and time.
"We witnessed an extraordinary community wrap itself around Little Wild Tribe. People didn't just offer sympathy, they turned up, they brought tools, skills, materials and countless hours of hard work."
Local joiners, carpenters and other tradespeople worked alongside families and neighbouring childcare providers to repair structures and clear debris. Staff said offers of help came from hundreds of families and businesses across the area.
Damage limited but impact profound
Although Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said crews were able to stop the blaze spreading further through the woods and helped protect animals on site, staff emphasised the wider impact beyond the physical damage. Little Wild Tribe provides outdoor play and learning space where children can "explore, imagine, take risks and simply be children" — values the co-founders said were reflected in the community response.
