Essex Pedal Power celebrated another year of its community cycling programme on Saturday with a countywide Big Ride Out that drew riders of all ages and abilities. The scheme, which has supplied thousands of free bikes across the county since 2021, saw 44 people take part in group rides organised in several towns and communities.
Countywide rides and an endurance mark
Organisers reported that groups met locally for short, accessible circuits aimed at encouraging confidence and social connection. In addition, a team of five riders completed an 85-mile challenge to underline the scheme’s impact and maintain the celebratory tone of the day. Riders and supporters gathered in Harwich to welcome the long-distance group as they finished, greeted by cheers and applause.
Intergenerational turnout and personal progress
The Big Ride Out emphasised cycling as a cross-generational activity. The youngest participant was aged four and the oldest 85, while one six-year-old, Clark, was singled out by organisers after learning to ride through the programme when he was four. His mother, Wendy, described the family outing as a chance to exercise together and meet like-minded people.
“We had such a brilliant time. It was wonderful to get out together as a family and enjoy an afternoon of exercise, challenge and meeting like-minded people.”
Participants in Colchester reported overcoming apprehension about joining group rides. Emmanuel, who enjoys repairing bicycles and helping others, led part of a route. Regular cyclist Emma said the experience helped her build confidence and connect with others as they rode along the Wivenhoe Trail.
“I felt supported throughout the ride and encouraged to go at my own pace. Cycling along the Wivenhoe Trail was a calm and enjoyable experience.”
