Motorists and local residents in Middlesbrough should expect continued disruption to journeys this week as a programme of road resurfacing, bridge repairs and utility maintenance keep traffic management measures in place across the town.
Bridge carriageway works cause longest-running disruption
The most significant engineering activity remains the major repair scheme at the A172 Stokesley Road/A174 Marton interchange. Work on the bridge has required traffic to be channelled through chicanes into two-way single lanes, with occasional temporary lane or overnight full closures. Turning restrictions are in force: right turns onto and from the A174 are prohibited, and U-turns have been banned for 300m either side of the works. Slip roads onto the A174 from Stokesley Road have also been closed recently on safety grounds. The project began in March and is scheduled to continue into the autumn.
Multiple utility operations across the town this week
Water and gas companies are carrying out a number of planned jobs that will affect local streets. The following list highlights locations where temporary traffic signals, multi-way lights or full closures will be used between 27 July and early August:
- Acklam Road (junction with Stainsby Road) – multi-way lights (31 July)
- Brougham Street (junction with Snowdon Road) – road closed for water works (27 July–21 August)
- Kelvin Grove – road closure for water works (8 June–3 August)
- Lower Feversham Street – two-way lights for water works (29 July–7 August)
- Overdale Road – multi-way lights for water works (20 July–28 August)
Other shorter-duration or single-day works — including lane controls and multi-way signals — are also scheduled on Penrith Road, Strait Lane, Sunnyside and Westerdale Road/Primary View.
Footpaths and verge maintenance also in progress
Not all activity affects carriageways. Footway renewal and verge works are under way at locations such as Cleveland Drive and Kingsbridge Crescent, with pedestrian protection and temporary signing in place during working hours. Where pavements are closed, alternative pedestrian routes will be signposted.
