Leicestershire County Council has announced a series of temporary closures at three recycling and household waste sites as part of a programme of essential improvement works scheduled over the coming months. The authority said the work is intended to maintain safe operations at the sites and to secure their long‑term usability for residents.

Mountsorrel to shut from 27 October

The council confirmed the Mountsorrel site will close from Tuesday 27 October so repairs to the concrete base in the lower yard can be carried out. The site is due to reopen in early December, the council said.

Further works at Kibworth and Melton — dates yet to be set

In addition to Mountsorrel, the sites at Kibworth and Melton are scheduled to receive improvement works later this year and into winter. The authority has not yet published firm closure dates for those two locations.

The council encouraged residents to use nearby alternative sites while works are underway and pointed people towards its online list of household waste and recycling centres and opening times.

"While we apologise for any inconvenience caused by the temporary closures, the works are necessary investments. I thank residents for their understanding and encourage them to use their nearest alternative site during the works,"

The comment was provided by Adam Tilbury, the council's cabinet member for environment and waste.

Practical information for residents

Residents who normally use the affected sites should plan ahead. Useful steps include checking the council's website for updated opening times, using an alternative local site while closures are in place and avoiding leaving waste in public places. Household collections run by district councils are separate services; residents should consult their district council if they have queries about kerbside collections.

Councils routinely carry out maintenance to ensure public facilities remain safe and compliant. While temporary disruption is inconvenient, such works are intended to reduce longer‑term closures and safety risks caused by deterioration.

For the latest information on site locations and opening hours, residents should consult the Leicestershire County Council website or contact the council's waste team directly.

This article will be updated if the council publishes closure dates for the Kibworth and Melton sites.
