A 25-year-old man is fighting for his life after suffering a head wound when he was reportedly attacked with a screwdriver at a building site in Purton, near Swindon.

The victim, named by family as Jamie Chappell and described as from Bristol, was taken to Southmead Hospital where he underwent an initial operation and remains in intensive care in a critical condition. Medics have indicated he will require further surgery.

Chappell's family expressed profound distress at his condition while thanking people who helped at the scene and the emergency teams that attended.
"Every hour is a battle... our lives have been turned upside down in an instant," the family said, adding they were "determined" to support Jamie through surgery and recovery.
Police and court action
Police intervened after the incident, and a 36-year-old man, James Denys of Ravensdale, East Wichel, has been charged with assault causing grievous bodily harm. He appeared before magistrates and was remanded in custody. His next scheduled appearance is at Swindon Crown Court on 21 August.
A second man, also 36, was initially arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender but has since been released on bail while inquiries continue.
