Designer outlet seeks physical expansion at southern edge of site
Plans to extend the McArthur Glen Bridgend Designer Outlet have been lodged with Bridgend County Borough Council, setting out proposals that would add around 2,300 square metres of retail floorspace and a new decked car park to the site.
The outlet, which first opened in May 1998 and currently hosts roughly 80 retailers alongside leisure and food operators, would see development focused at its southernmost end. The application describes creating eight new shopping units together with a larger unit that could include a mezzanine level, plus associated landscaping, access works and raised parking.
Developers say the aim is to improve the centre’s architectural character and commercial resilience while maintaining its position as a premium retail destination and a major local employer.
"The overall aspirations for the development are to create a high-quality, inviting, premium retail atmosphere consistent with the centre's positioning," the planning documents say.
Local concerns and developer responses
Public consultation carried out before submission recorded 23 responses. Objections raised included worries about:
- noise and loss of residential amenity
- additional traffic and parking pressures
- a potential rise in litter and waste
In reply, the applicant characterised the proposed extension as relatively limited in scale and said it would not lead to material changes in traffic flows. They also pointed out there are no plans within this proposal to add further food and drink operators, which they argue reduces the likelihood of increased littering.

Key elements of the submission include the retail extension, a possible mezzanine within a larger unit, a raised deck for parking and landscaping to knit the new development into the existing site. If approved and built, the extension would make use of part of the current overflow car park.
