Emergency services attended an incident on the railway close to Eaglescliffe on the evening of 28 July after reports of two people on the tracks. One person was pronounced dead at the scene and a second was taken to hospital with injuries described as life-changing.

Official response and investigation
A spokesperson for British Transport Police said officers attended after "reports of two casualties on the tracks" and confirmed one person died at the scene while the other was taken to hospital. They added enquiries are continuing into the circumstances leading up to the incident.
"Officers were called to the [station] near Stockton-on-Tees at 10.16pm yesterday (July 28) following reports of two casualties on the tracks... Paramedics also attended, and sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene while another person was taken to hospital with life-changing injuries."
The North East Ambulance Service said it sent two double-crewed ambulances, a duty officer and a clinical team leader, supported by the Great North Air Ambulance medical car. One patient was conveyed to James Cook University Hospital. While crews were at the location, staff were also alerted to a person who became unwell on the train; that individual and two other passengers were assisted to leave the service and did not require treatment.
