Officers from Leicestershire Police were observed at an address in Sparkenhoe Street, Highfields, on Friday afternoon as part of an ongoing investigation into the death of a man who was discovered injured on London Road earlier this week.
Developments in the city-centre inquiry
The force confirmed the activity at the Highfields address related to the murder investigation launched following an assault on Wednesday night. Patrol officers were approached by a man in his 20s who had suffered significant wounds to his chest and stomach close to Saxby Street on London Road at about 10.45pm on Wednesday, 22 July. He was taken to hospital but died in the early hours of Thursday, 23 July.
A post-mortem examination found the victim had sustained multiple injuries, including three stab wounds. Detectives believe the attack took place in De Montfort Place.
Arrests and police appeal
So far, ten people have been arrested in connection with the investigation.
| Number arrested | Age(s) / suspicion |
|---|---|
| 6 | Men aged 21, 21, 33, 20, 19 and 18 — arrested on suspicion of murder (in custody) |
| 4 | Two men (52) and two women (43) — arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender |
Detective Inspector Lorna Granville, of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Crime Team, thanked local residents and workers who had provided information and CCTV which has been instrumental to inquiries.
"I’d like to thank people who live and work in the area for coming forward with information and assisting us, particularly in relation to capturing vital CCTV,"
She also issued a direct appeal for further witnesses, specifically asking anyone who was driving in the area between 10.30pm and 11pm on Wednesday night to come forward. "Anything you can tell us, no matter how insignificant you think it is, could be important," she said.
Impact on the local community
The presence of multiple arrests and searches in Highfields is likely to be of concern to residents and businesses in the immediate area. The locations named in the investigation — London Road, Saxby Street and De Montfort Place — are close to busy parts of the city centre and near student and residential areas.
Local people who saw police activity or have information are being asked to assist the investigation. Inquiries remain ongoing and there has been no confirmation of charges beyond those held in custody on suspicion.
