Darlington were beaten 4-2 by Carlisle United in Friday evening's friendly at Blackwell Meadows, a match that offered valuable minutes ahead of the new campaign but ended with a setback when new signing Sam Hetherington was forced off through injury.
First-half burst from Carlisle
Carlisle struck early and decisively, taking a three-goal cushion inside the opening half hour which left the Quakers chasing the game. The visitors, who will play in the division above Darlington in the coming season, capitalised on openings to move well ahead before the hosts began to recover.

Darlington did not lack for response. After Carlisle's early dominance, the hosts began to create openings and pulled a goal back when Mark Beck supplied a cross that allowed Ben Hedley to finish past the visiting goalkeeper. Later in the second half, a foul on Ellis Stanton led to a penalty which Beck converted, cutting the deficit to two.
Second-half improvement but too little, too late
The Quakers enjoyed the better of the second period and finished strongly, with several attempts from the bench and starters alike. Efforts from substitutes and regulars, including Max Howells, Paddy McLaughlin and Ellis Stanton, tested the Carlisle defence in the closing stages, but Darlington could not find the additional goals required to force parity.
