A man has been jailed for nine years after being convicted of raping an unconscious woman in Sheffield city centre in the early hours of 20 September last year. The victim was taken to hospital and forensic enquiries afterwards helped build the prosecution case.
Witnesses filmed attack and helped identify suspect
The defendant, 41-year-old Ansar Younis of Sheffield, was found guilty at Sheffield Crown Court following a trial in March and was sentenced on 2 July. The assault happened at about 01:00 BST, according to police accounts.
Police said four girls who were present challenged the man as the attack unfolded. When he ignored them, they recorded the incident on their phones. Their footage and subsequent identification of Younis to officers led to his arrest and charge.
"This was a horrific attack against a woman who did not and could not consent... These girls were upstanders, not bystanders," said Detective Constable Sophie Windle, the officer in charge of the case.
Emergency services and investigation
Witnesses alerted the ambulance service during the incident. Paramedics took the woman to hospital where she received treatment and samples were taken to support the investigation. South Yorkshire Police said forensic evidence from the hospital, together with the witness footage and identification, proved decisive at trial.
