Fateh Singh produced a match-turning spell of 6-32 to spearhead Worcestershire Rapids to a three-wicket victory over Derbyshire Falcons as the champions opened their Metro Bank One Day Cup defence at New Road.
Spinner triggers dramatic collapse
After electing to bowl, Worcestershire saw the Falcons build what looked like a comfortable platform at 107-2. That position rapidly evaporated when Singh, the young off-spinner, was brought into the attack. He proceeded to rip through the visitors’ middle and lower order, producing a remarkable run of wickets that reduced Derbyshire from a position of control to 138 all out.
Singh’s nine-over spell included a variety of dismissals — stumping, LBW, caught and bowled among them — and marked a career-best return in List A cricket. He claimed a second five-wicket haul of the summer for Worcestershire.
“I think it’s one of those days where it just went my way, picking up the wickets especially. And it was really nice. Felt nice out of the hand, which seemed and it’s even better to just take the wickets as well,”
The off-spinner reflected on the feel of the ball and the value of persistence: “I think if you just keep trying to put the ball in the right area, keep stacking, then if the rewards come, they come and you can be happy with them.”
Support from the seamers and a nervy chase
Singh’s performance was well supported by seamer and List A debutant Beyers Swanepoel, who returned figures of 3-15, his early breakthroughs laying the foundations for the collapse. The home bowlers combined to deliver a professional bowling display that kept the Falcons under constant pressure.
