Swansea Council has announced the return of its popular summer free bus scheme, which will operate across the city for 13 days during the school holidays. The measure — now in its sixth year — aims to ease travel costs for families and support access to major events, including the Wales Airshow.

Extended hours for Airshow weekend

For the first time the scheme will run until 11pm on Saturday 25 July, allowing people to use bus services later into the evening to attend the Airshow’s new Afterburn programme. On other dates free services will operate until the usual finish time.

“The school holidays can be an expensive time, so every saving helps,”

The council leader, Rob Stewart, said the offer was intended to make it easier for families to enjoy public attractions without worrying about parking or the cost of returning home. He estimated that a typical family of four could save around £20 on a single journey, underlining the scheme’s role in reducing day-trip costs.

Dates and practical advice

Councillors stressed that the free travel applies to journeys that both start and finish within the Swansea council area, and that passengers should check individual operator timetables — especially on the Airshow weekend when demand for homeward services is expected to be high.

  • Free travel covers all council-area bus services for journeys originating and ending within Swansea
  • Saturday 25 July services run until 11pm to accommodate the Airshow Afterburn event
  • Passengers are advised to check timetables with operators before travelling

Rebecca Fogarty, the cabinet member for community support, emphasised that the scheme was useful beyond the Airshow, encouraging trips to the beach, the city centre and visits to family and friends. She urged people to plan ahead for busy event days.

Since its launch in 2021 the scheme has recorded more than a million passenger journeys, and the council has extended similar free travel offers at other times of the year, including around Easter and the run-up to Christmas. This year’s 13 days of summer cover is slightly fewer than last summer’s 15, but the council says the programme has broadened in scope with additional free services introduced at other times.

For those heading to the Airshow, organisers and the council recommend arriving early, allowing extra time for travel, and checking return timetables with bus companies to avoid delays at peak departure times.
