A Swindon motorist has been jailed after a dangerous overtaking manoeuvre on the A420 led to a head-on collision that sent a van flipping and rolling several times.
At Oxford Crown Court, Darryl Young, aged 64 and of Zakopane Road, Swindon, was found guilty of a single count of dangerous driving relating to the crash on 13 June 2023 near Kingston Bagpuize, where the carriageway narrows from dual to single.
What happened on the A420
Prosecutors told the court Young was driving a Mercedes-Benz SLK when he attempted the overtake. The collision with a van caused the other vehicle to flip and roll multiple times; Young's car was reported to have been seen spinning around at the scene.
A witness gave evidence that they saw the attempted manoeuvre before the collision. Prosecutor Prashant Shah described the overtake as dangerous during the trial earlier this year.
